What is a cold press juicer and how does a cold press juicer work?
For starters a cold press or masticating juicer is a type of juicer that uses a masticating process to create juice from fruits and vegetables. This is known as a cold press method because little to no heat is involved in the process of separating the juice from the flesh of the fruits and vegetables you are juicing.
This is preferable to other methods of juicing mainly because cold pressed juice retains more of the beneficial nutrients and enzymes that the fruits and veggies posses. The more heat created in the process of juicing the more nutrients lost.
How Do Cold Press Juicers Work
As mentioned, a cold press juicer uses a masticating process to separate the juice from the flesh of the produce. This is done by using a screw auger that both squeezes and crushes (mastication process) the produce to get the juice. This is preferable to using a centrifugal juicer or a blender as both methods will create fairly large amounts of heat thus destroying nutrients and enzymes.
Additionally, centrifugal juicers, which use a spinning blade to remove the juice from the produce, will suck air into the juice because of the blades spinning motion. This air is going to make the juice more frothy. Another downside to the heat that is created is that this will cause oxidation and make the juice break down faster meaning it can not be stored long. Juice from a centrifugal juicer is only good for about 24 hours where as juice from a cold press juicer can be stored for up to 72 hours.
Masticating Juicers Not Truly Cold Pressed
It should be noted that this masticating process although referred to as cold pressed is much different than the process used to make the cold pressed juice you find being sold in juice bars and in stores. These juices are made using hydraulic presses which squeeze the produce through fine mesh which removes nearly all of the juice, this is truly a cold pressed process.
After the juice is made it is bottled, sealed and then put into a large chamber, this chamber is then filled with water which creates a large amount of pressure to inactivate pathogens creating a juice that can be stored for weeks instead of days.
So although a masticating juicer is referred to as a cold press juicer it is not truly a cold press process and the juice cannot be stored as long as what you find in stores. However this is due to how the juice is bottled and the pressure applied and not because of the process of extracting the juice.
Why Use a Cold Press Juicer
Of course the ability to preserve more nutrients, create healthier juice and store your juice longer is not the only benefits to owning a masticating juicer. Although typically more expensive then centrifugal juicers, a cold pressed juicer will use much less produce to make the same amount of juice, this will save you money in the long run and more than help make the more expensive price tag worth it.
Additionally, many cold press juicers can also function to make things such as pasta, rice cakes, sauces and butters. This again really helps to make the cost of the juicer easier to justify.
Keep in mind that although there are many benefits to owning a cold pressed juicer there are some things you should be aware of, mainly that these slow juicers take a longer time to make the same amount of juice as their counterparts. This is for two reasons, the slow process in which the juicer works and the fact that the produce almost always needs to be cut into smaller pieces than that which a centrifugal juicer can handle.
